Silver Top helps War Widows

War Widow

Drivers from Silver Top and Premier Cabs were among the volunteers who provided free transport for more than 300 war widows from across Sydney to the annual walk and picnic at the Kokoda Track Memorial Walkway in Concord.

Silver Top and Premier Cabs has provided transport for veterans on behalf of the Veterans' Affair across Sydney for more than 15 years.

Drivers are specially trained in the needs of the veteran and war widow community and provide door-to-door service for medical trips and other trips.

DVA NSW Conference

War Veterans' medalsIn August, the Department of Veterans' Affairs hosted a conference for representatives from the taxi industry in NSW and various Ex-Service Organisations (ESO's) including the War Widows Guild, the RSL and the Vietnam Veterans' Association.

It was the first ever meeting of all parties to discuss how the transport of veterans and war widows is operating since the new contracts started in 2012.

The taxi industry contingent was headed by NSW Taxi Council's CEO, Roy Wakelin-King and Premier Cabs was represented by Rhonda Chesterton and Stuart Palmer.

The DVA advised that compaint levels about taxi travel are relatively low compared with the number of trips undertaken.

Premier Cabs' DVA training course covers the requirements for drivers who wish to participate in this work and sets the standard at the highest level in the transport of passengers in public vehicles. The requirements are common sense, old-fashioned courtesy - providing a 'door-to-door' service, assisting with car doors, seat belts and any personal items such as walkers or sticks.

Premier and Silver Top are proud of a long tradition of service to the veteran and war widow community stretching back more than fifty years including participation in many ANZAC day marches where taxis have taken less-mobile veterans and their families around the parade.
